Building The Railway
While the Lego train
set has been around for a long time it is not the same simple little set that
it was when it first came out. Back in the 60's the only thing that powered the train was
imagination.
Today the locomotive is powered around the track by a battery powered
motor. Not only can you buy enough Lego train track to build quite a layout you can now buy plenty
of building to create your own city.
Add in some of the miniature people and a Lego train station and you have
everything your child needs to have untold hours of fun.
Currently Lego has three different train sets available two of which come
with an oval of track and the third, which is the Emerald Night set for ages 14+, does not come
with any track as it is far too big to fit on any of the Lego track.
With the right accessories you child can take the Lego cargo train set and turn
it into a complete layout much like his older siblings or dad likes to do with his "OO" or "N"
gauge model railroads.
This is the perfect way to get a young child interested in the hobby without
having to worry that he might end up breaking one the expensive parts to your model railroad.

Variety Is King
With this in mind Lego has gone beyond the oval track that still comes
standard in both their passenger train and cargo train sets. You can now buy individual boxes of
track; in each box you get 8 straight sections of track and 8 curved sections so that your child
can go as far as he wants with the size of his Lego train track.
To allow him to add spur lines and branches Lego now has switching tracks
available in both left and right hand switches. You get one of each switch and four pieces of
curved track in each box.
New to Lego train track this year is the new Lego flexible track, your
child can create any curve he wants to add more realistic detail to his layout with this box of 64
pieces that all connect together to form a fully flexible piece track that measures as long
as 204.8 cm (84.8 inches long.) All of this Lego track is made from the same plastic as the block
and as such doe not conduct electricity so it will not work with the Lego 9V remote control
train.
This year start your child out with one of the Lego train sets and add
some track for birthdays, at Christmas or whenever the mood strikes and before long you will find
yourself on the floor next to your child helping him to build the next transcontinental railroad
using Lego train track.
